Giorgi Taktakishvili

Committee Chairperson

 

According to the decision of the Executive Board of the Bar Association, Giorgi Taktakishvili holds the position of the Chairman of the Intellectual Property Law Committee of the Association from February 1, 2022 and leads the activities of the Committee.

In 1992-1997 Giorgi studied at the Faculty of Law of Tbilisi State University.

Until 2000, Giorgi worked as a lawyer in both the private and public sectors. In February 2000, he started working at the Georgian National Intellectual Property Center "Sakpatenti" and since then his activities are continuously related to intellectual property.

In 2000-2005 he held the position of Deputy Head of the Legal Department and later Head of the Legal Department at Sakpatenti. At the same time, he was a member of the Chamber of Appeals of Sakpatenti. During the same period, with Giorgi's direct participation, a package of changes to be made to the legislation regulating the intellectual property was prepared. During his time at Sakpatenti, Giorgi was also responsible for relations with international organizations for further harmonization of Georgian legislation with the World Trade Organization and EU standards. Giorgis tenure at Sakpatenti ended in 2005. In the same year he co-authored a textbook entitled International Copyright Law.

In 2005-2007, Giorgi was an independent lawyer, and since 2007 he has been co-founding with his partners a specialized law firm in the field of intellectual property - Mikadze Gegechkori Taktakishvili LLC - one of the leaders and partners of which he is still present. During this period, in addition to his advocacy work, Giorgi was invited several times by international organizations as an expert, including in 2009 he became an expert on the Georgian-European Policy and Legal Advice Center (GEPLAC) project, which served to improve enforcement of intellectual property law. At the invitation of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 2009-2010, Giorgi, as a National Consultant, participated in a study on counterfeiting and piracy. In 2020-2021 with participation of Giorgi, as expert invited by EUIPO, "Guidelines for Examination of National and International Design Applications" was drafted within the framework of the EU-Georgia Intellectual Property Project (EUGIPP). Within the same project, Giorgi is currently participating in the process of creating a "Trademark Guidlines for the Experts".

Today, Giorgi and his law firm in Georgia represent the interests of many foreign and local companies in protecting intellectual property rights.

Giorgi has been a member of the Bar Association since 2004, and he obtained the status of Georgian Patent Attorney in 2005. He is also the Chairman of the Georgian National Association of Patent Attorneys and a member of the National Group of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI).

In addition to his native language, Giorgi is fluent in English and Russian.
