The Chairman of the Georgian Bar Association, Irakli Kandashvili, met with Archil Gorduladze, Chair of the Parliament’s Legal Issues Committee. During the meeting, the parties discussed current legislative matters on the agenda.
In particular, Irakli Kandashvili presented to the Committee Chair the position of the Executive Council of the Georgian Bar Association, as well as the risks identified by the Association, regarding the draft Law of Georgia “On Legal Aid.”
“I took interest in the foundations of the draft law and the necessity of its adoption. I received an official proposal from the Committee Chair, and the Association will become involved in the process of working on the draft law.
Within the framework of the meeting, I also shared my position regarding the Law of Georgia ‘On Grants’ and emphasized that, in practice, there must be a clear distinction between cases where an attorney receives remuneration from abroad for providing specific legal services and cases that constitute foreign funding regulated by the grants legislation. Such remuneration should not be equated with foreign grant funding, and attorneys should not face obstacles in carrying out their professional activities for this reason. In the same context, I particularly stressed that individual attorneys are independent, including in expressing political opinions,” Irakli Kandashvili stated.
